What can I use if I don't have a printed quiz sheet or colouring materials?

Use plain paper and a pencil or crayons for your answer sheet and open a short anime quiz on a phone or tablet so you can follow Step 1 and still complete Steps 3–12.

I'm stuck underlining key words and matching genres—how do I fix that?

If underlining key words in Step 4 or matching genres in Step 7 is hard, use a highlighter or draw a box around keywords and keep a simple printed genre list nearby to compare titles and pictures.

How can I adapt this quiz activity for different ages?

For younger children have an adult read the quiz instructions and questions aloud (Steps 2–3) and let them answer with stickers or drawings, while older kids can add a timer, write full-sentence explanations for the three chosen answers (Step 11), and research Japanese word meanings.

How can we extend or personalize the finished quiz sheet before sharing?

Make your own bonus questions, sketch or colour each character next to their name as in Step 6, create a themed border with colouring materials from Step 12, and record a short explanation video to accompany the DIY.org post.

Facts about anime and beginner Japanese

🎨 Anime characters often have signature colors, hairstyles, or outfits that make them easier to identify in quick-picture quizzes.

🎭 Anime spans tons of genres — shōnen, shōjo, mecha, slice of life, isekai and more — so quizzes can include very different kinds of shows.

🎌 Many common Japanese words like "kawaii" (cute) and "arigatō" (thank you) pop up in anime and are used around the world!

🏆 Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003 — anime reaches global audiences and awards.

🧠 Taking quizzes and explaining your answers helps your memory and makes it easier to recognize characters and words later.
