Help!?

What can we substitute if we don't have clear plastic for the visor or thick cardboard for the body?

If you don't have clear plastic for the visor, use a recycled clear report cover, plastic food packaging, or a thin CD case cut to size and attach it over the visor in step 7 with tape or glue, and use stacked cereal boxes or poster board instead of thick cardboard for the body.

The visor keeps wrinkling or coming loose—how can we fix it?

If the clear plastic visor wrinkles or peels after step 7, trim a slightly larger piece and secure it flat with clear tape around all edges or press it under a heavy book while the glue fully dries.

How can I adapt the activity for very young children or older kids?

For preschoolers, have an adult handle the cutting steps (steps 4–6) and let them do painting (step 8) and sticker decorating (step 12), while older kids can use a craft knife safely to refine the visor (step 5) and add detailed outlines or extra props in step 10.

What are easy ways to enhance or personalize the crewmate costume?

To personalize and enhance the costume, add battery-powered LED strips around the visor when attaching the plastic in step 7, glue foam sheets to build a raised backpack while adding details in step 10, or use glow-in-the-dark paint during step 8 for a cool effect.

Facts about DIY costume making for kids

⚠️ Hot-melt adhesive (hot glue) grips materials fast, which is awesome for building—just use with adult supervision.

🎨 Acrylic paint dries fast and bonds well to cardboard, so costumes look great quickly.

🎮 Among Us launched in 2018 but became a huge hit in 2020 after popular streamers and creators played it.

📦 Corrugated cardboard is lightweight yet surprisingly strong—perfect for wearable costume shapes.

👓 Upcycled clear plastic (like report covers or clamshells) makes a shiny visor that keeps your face visible for safe role-play.

How do I make a wearable Among Us crewmate costume?

To make a wearable Among Us crewmate costume, measure your child’s torso and head, sketch front and back carapace shapes on large cardboard, then cut two identical panels. Score and bend edges, join sides with duct tape or hot glue to make a shell, leaving space for arms. Paint the outside in one color and let dry. Cut a clear plastic visor, smooth edges, and attach with rivets or strong tape and elastic straps. Add foam/felt decorations and test fit before play.

What materials do I need to make an Among Us crewmate costume?

You'll need large corrugated cardboard or a big moving box, utility knife and scissors, ruler and pencil, hot glue gun or strong tape, acrylic paints and brushes, a clear plastic sheet for the visor (acetate/report cover), sandpaper to smooth edges, elastic or adjustable straps, foam or felt for accents, markers or stickers, and safety gear like gloves and a cutting mat. Optional: LED lights, Velcro, and paint sealer. Always supervise tool use and paints around kids.

What ages is this Among Us costume craft suitable for?

This craft suits ages about 6–12 with adult supervision. Younger children (6–8) can help paint, decorate, and hold pieces while an adult cuts and assembles. Ages 9–12 can plan measurements, cut cardboard with guidance, and attach the visor more independently. For preschoolers (<6) simplify by making a wearable paper-cutout or foam version. Always supervise cutting and small decorations; adapt complexity to your child’s fine motor skills and safety needs.

What safety tips and play variations should I know for role-playing as an Among Us crewmate?

Safety tips: use non-toxic paints, work in a well-ventilated area, sand and round visor edges, secure straps so the costume won’t slip, avoid covering the mouth/nose, check for small choking hazards, and supervise tool use. For play variations, add LED battery lights, make a mini 'pet' from cardboard, create group missions (crewmate vs impostor), or decorate with reversible colors for team games. These adjustments boost creativity and cooperative play.
