What can we use if we don't have an iPad or Procreate?

If you don't have Procreate on an iPad, use a tablet app like Adobe Fresco or Autodesk Sketchbook or draw on paper with pencil and photograph or scan the sketch to import into any app that supports layers so you can follow steps like adding a sketch layer, a color layer, and exporting a PNG to upload to DIY.org.

My colors are bleeding outside the shapes when I paint—what should I try?

Make sure you added the color layer beneath the sketch layer and then either enable Alpha Lock (lock transparency) on the color layer or use a clipping mask so paint stays inside your shapes before you export via Actions > Share.

How can I adapt this activity for younger or older kids?

For younger kids simplify by using a single layer for sketch-and-color, a basic brush from the Brush Library, and large simple shapes with a limited color circle palette, while older kids can add extra layers for highlights, try custom brushes, blending modes, and more detailed text on the text layer.

How can we make the finished artwork more special before uploading to DIY.org?

Personalize the piece by creating a custom color palette, importing a texture or photo onto a new layer, adding hand-lettered details on the top layer or text layer, or recording a timelapse/animation inside Procreate and then using Actions > Share to export the best format (PNG or video) for DIY.org.

Facts about digital art for kids

✏️ The Apple Pencil senses both pressure and tilt so lines can change thickness and texture just like real tools.

⏱️ Procreate has helpful features like QuickShape and Streamline to make clean shapes and smooth strokes faster.

🧩 Layers in digital art let you keep sketching, coloring, and shading separate so you can edit without ruining other parts.

🖌️ Procreate includes hundreds of built-in brushes and lets you create or import custom brushes for unique looks.

🎨 Procreate was built for iPad and became a favorite because it’s optimized for touch and the Apple Pencil.

How do I run the "Tell us your Fav Procreate Tool" activity with my child?

Open Procreate and create a small canvas (for example 2048 x 2048). Let your child pick a favorite tool—brush, smudge, or eraser—and spend a few minutes exploring presets. Have them sketch on a base layer, add color on new layers, experiment with opacity and blend modes, and name layers. Save or export the image, then ask the child to describe why they chose that tool and how it helped their illustration.

What materials do I need to create a small digital illustration in Procreate?

You’ll need an iPad with the Procreate app installed and a charged battery. An Apple Pencil or stylus gives better control, but a finger can work for simpler tasks. Optional items: a tablet stand, reference images, and a place to save files (iCloud or Photos). Make sure Procreate is updated and screen time settings allow use. If Procreate isn’t available, free drawing apps offer similar brush and layer features.

What ages is this Procreate drawing activity suitable for?

This activity fits many ages: about 5–7 for supervised mark-making and simple coloring, 8–12 for independent exploration of brushes and layers, and teens for advanced techniques like textures and blending. Adjust complexity—use tracing templates or limited brushes for younger kids and set creative challenges for older ones. Always supervise younger children for device handling, app navigation, and saving their work.

What are the benefits of doing this Procreate tool activity with my child?

The activity encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and basic digital art literacy. Exploring brushes and layers teaches texture, opacity, and composition, while explaining tool choice builds vocabulary and critical thinking. It boosts confidence as children share finished pieces and track progress. Encourage experimentation and positive feedback, and limit session length to avoid screen fatigue, pairing digital drawing with offline art for balance.
