What can we use if we don't have Procreate, an iPad, or an Apple Pencil for this activity?

If you don't have Procreate or an Apple Pencil you can use Procreate Pocket on an iPhone or another drawing app with brush controls (for example Autodesk SketchBook or MediBang Paint) and a basic stylus or your finger to follow the steps for duplicating and editing a brush in the Brush Library.

My custom brush changes didn't seem to save — what should I check?

If edits disappear after you tap Done, make sure you first duplicated the original brush (swipe left > Duplicate), then reopen Brush Studio to reapply changes and tap Done again, and if pressure settings (Size Pressure/Opacity Pressure) don't react, reconnect your Apple Pencil, toggle Bluetooth, and restart Procreate.

How can I adapt the steps for different ages or skill levels?

For younger kids skip deep Brush Studio edits and let them pick a fun brush from the Brush Library, make a new layer, and draw repeating motifs with bright colors, while older kids can follow Shape, Grain, Stroke Path (Spacing slider) and Apple Pencil settings to create more complex custom brushes and repeat motifs across the canvas.

How can we extend or personalize the finished repeating pattern?

To enhance the project, create multiple duplicated brushes with different Shape and Grain sources, draw motifs on separate layers, experiment with blend modes and opacity, then export the result or share the finished repeating pattern on DIY.org.

Facts about digital art and brush design

✏️ Pressure and tilt (with Apple Pencil or similar styluses) let you vary stroke width, opacity, and texture in real time.

⚙️ Digital brushes work by stamping a brush tip image along your stroke while settings like spacing, jitter, and scatter change the result.

🔁 Procreate includes canvas-guides and tiling helpers so you can make seamless repeating patterns for motifs and wallpapers.

🖌️ Procreate was first released in 2011 by Savage Interactive and quickly became popular with iPad artists.

🎨 You can import photos or textures into Procreate to make custom brush tips and create totally new brush stamps.

How do I create and use custom brush patterns in Procreate?

Open Procreate and create a new brush in Brush Studio. Import or draw a small brush shape (shape source) and a texture (grain source). Adjust Stroke Path spacing, jitter, and scatter, then tweak Dynamics like pressure, tilt, and opacity. Test repeatedly on a canvas, resizing shape and grain until you like the pattern. Save the brush, then paint repeating motifs by stamping or stroking, using layers and color palettes to build colorful repeats.

What materials and tools do I need to design brush patterns in Procreate?

You need an iPad with Procreate installed, plus an Apple Pencil or compatible stylus for pressure control. Optional materials: texture photos or scans to use as grain, reference images, a stylus grip, protective case, and a simple color palette. A quiet workspace and internet access for tutorials can help. Physical sketchbook and pencil are useful for planning patterns before you go digital.

What ages is designing brush patterns in Procreate suitable for?

This activity suits kids roughly 7 and up with adult supervision; children 10+ often manage the interface and pressure sensitivity independently. Younger children (5–7) can participate by choosing colors, stamping prepared brushes, or tracing patterns while an adult handles brush settings. Adjust complexity to skill level, offer short sessions to avoid frustration, and supervise any downloads or purchases inside the app.

What are the benefits and safe practices for kids designing Procreate brush patterns?

Designing brushes builds creativity, digital art skills, and fine motor control while teaching cause-and-effect as kids see settings change results. It encourages pattern recognition, color theory practice, and confidence experimenting. For safety, limit continuous screen time, encourage regular breaks, and check posture. Variations include creating animated brushes, using photo textures for grains, or designing themed brush packs for holidays and storytelling.
