Learn to solve a Pyraminx puzzle by practicing step by step moves, recognizing patterns, and timing yourself to improve speed and logic.

Step-by-step guide to solve a Pyraminx puzzle
Step 1
Look closely at your Pyraminx and name the three part types: tips small corner pieces; center triangles; and edge pieces.
Step 2
Twist each tip so its color matches the three center triangles on that tip's corner.
Step 3
Pick one face color to start with and hold that face on top.
Step 4
Rotate the top layers until the three center triangles on the top face form one solid color triangle.
Step 5
Find an edge piece that has the top color and turn the bottom layers until that edge sits directly under the place it belongs on the top face.
Step 6
Lift that edge into the top face by turning the two small layers around the top face so the edge snaps into place.
Step 7
Repeat finding and inserting the other top-color edges until the entire top face and its three adjacent edges are solved.
Step 8
Turn the puzzle to inspect the remaining three edges and decide which one you want to move next into place.
Step 9
Use the same insert move from Step 6 to move each remaining edge into its correct spot one at a time while keeping the top face intact.
Step 10
Start your timer and practise solving the whole Pyraminx from a mixed scramble until you complete it; write your time in your notebook.
Step 11
Repeat Step 10 three times to spot patterns in your moves and try to beat your best time.
Step 12
Describe in your notebook which moves or tricks helped you go faster and which parts are still tricky.
Step 13
Practice those tricky moves slowly five more times to build a pattern in your fingers.
Step 14
Time one final solve to try your fastest clean solve yet and write the time and any notes in your notebook.
Step 15
Share a photo or short note about your solved Pyraminx and your fastest time on DIY.org.

You're almost there! Complete all the steps, bring your creation to life, post it, and conquer the challenge!

Help!?
What can we use instead if we don't have a physical Pyraminx, a timer, or a notebook?
If you don't have a physical Pyraminx, use a Pyraminx app or online simulator for Steps 1–9, use your phone's timer for Steps 11 and 14, and any paper or notes app as your notebook for Steps 12–13 and recording times to share on DIY.org in Step 15.
My edge won't 'snap' into place or the top face keeps getting messed up—what should we try?
If an edge won't snap in Step 6 or the top face shifts when moving other edges in Step 8, stop, confirm the edge is directly under its spot (Step 5), realign the center triangles on top if needed (Step 4), and practice the insert move slowly as described in Step 13 to build finger memory.
How can we adapt this activity for younger or older kids?
For younger children, focus on Steps 1–6 only (naming tips, matching tip colors, and inserting a couple of top edges) and color-code pieces with stickers, while older kids should complete all Steps 10–14, use the timer to record patterns in the notebook, and learn algorithms to speed up the insert move.
How can we extend or personalize the Pyraminx practice after finishing the steps?
To extend the activity, create custom sticker color schemes, set a family leaderboard using the times you write in your notebook (Steps 11–14), film short clips of tricky moves or your fastest solve to post on DIY.org (Step 15), and design drills that repeat only the insert move from Step 6 for five minutes to improve speed.

Facts about twisty puzzles and spatial reasoning
⏱️ Pyraminx is an official event at World Cube Association (WCA) competitions where cubers race the clock.
🧠 Many Pyraminx solves are learned by pattern recognition and just a few algorithms, so it’s great for logical thinking.
🎯 The puzzle has four rotating tips plus edge pieces you must align — practicing move sequences helps you spot patterns faster.
🧩 The Pyraminx is a tetrahedron-shaped twisty puzzle — think of a pyramid-shaped Rubik's Cube!
🌟 With practice and finger tricks, many speedcubers can solve the Pyraminx in under 5 seconds.
