Step-by-step guide to make a vegan chocolate cake

What you need
8-inch round cake pan or muffin tin, adult supervision required, all-purpose flour, apple cider vinegar, baking powder, baking soda, cooling rack, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowl and whisk or spoon, parchment paper, plant-based milk such as soy or oat, salt, spatula and oven mitts, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla extract, vegan frosting or powdered sugar and sprinkles, vegetable oil

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Grease the 8-inch cake pan with a little vegetable oil.

Step 3

Press a circle of parchment paper into the bottom of the greased pan.

Measure and add 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour; 1 cup sugar; 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder; 1 teaspoon baking powder; 1/2 teaspoon baking soda; and 1/4 teaspoon salt into the mixing bowl.

Step 5

Whisk the dry ingredients until they are evenly mixed.

Step 6

Measure 1 cup plant-based milk; 1/3 cup vegetable oil; 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar; and 2 teaspoons vanilla into a measuring cup.

Step 7

Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients.

Step 8

Stir the batter gently until it becomes smooth and mostly lump-free.

Step 9

Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

Smooth the top of the batter with a spatula.

With adult supervision bake the cake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes.

Ask an adult to remove the cake from the oven and place it on a cooling rack to cool for at least 20 minutes.

Once the cake is cool decorate it by spreading vegan frosting or dusting powdered sugar and adding sprinkles or chocolate chips.
