Mind-Blowing DIY Shoes Made Out Of Recycled Materials

What you need
Adult supervision required, cardboard sheet, colouring materials (optional), fabric scraps, non-toxic glue or strong tape, pencil, ruler, scissors, string or yarn

Step 1

Gather all the materials on a table so you can reach everything easily.

Step 2

Place both feet on the cardboard and trace each foot outline with a pencil.

Step 3

Draw a 1 cm line all around each tracing to make the sole shape.

Step 4

Cut out both sole shapes from the cardboard carefully with scissors.

Step 5

Glue a second cardboard layer onto each sole to make them stronger.

Step 6

Put a heavy book on each glued sole and leave it for a few minutes to press.

Step 7

Cut two fabric rectangles each about 3 cm larger than its sole on all sides.

Step 8

Lay one fabric rectangle over a sole and fold the front up to form a toe flap.

Step 9

Turn that sole over and glue the fabric edges to the bottom of the sole to hold it in place.

Step 10

Make two small slits in the sides of that sole where the strap will go.

Step 11

Cut a fabric strip or a length of string to use as the strap.

Step 12

Thread the fabric strip or string through the slits on that sole.

Step 13

Tie a knot under the sole to secure the strap and trim any extra ends.

Step 14

Repeat steps 8 to 13 for the other sole to finish the matching shoe.

Help!?

What can I use if I don't have cardboard, fabric, or string for the soles, uppers, or straps?

For the soles (steps 2–4) use a cereal box or shoebox panel instead of cardboard, for the fabric rectangles (step 7) cut an old T‑shirt or pillowcase, and for the strap (step 11) substitute a shoelace, ribbon, or twisted scrap of fabric.

My strap keeps pulling through the slits or the glued layers come apart—how do I fix that?

If the strap tears at the slits (step 10) reinforce the hole with tape or a small cardboard patch before threading and if the glued layers (step 5) separate, add more PVA glue, press longer under a heavy book, and clamp the edges until dry.

How can I adapt this recycled shoe activity for different ages?

For preschoolers have an adult trace and cut the soles (steps 2–4) and pre‑make the slits (step 10) while they fold and glue fabric (steps 6–7); for older kids let them measure, cut, sew the fabric instead of gluing, and design custom straps (steps 8–11).

What are simple ways to make the shoes nicer, stronger, or more personal after finishing step 13?

To enhance the finished shoes, glue a thin foam or old insole inside before step 6 for comfort, seal edges with clear tape for durability, and personalize with fabric paint, buttons, or sewn trim after step 13.

Facts about upcycling and recycled crafts

✂️ Tiny fabric scraps can be layered, braided, or glued to make comfy uppers — you don't need brand-new cloth.

📦 Corrugated cardboard is lightweight yet strong — its fluted middle makes a surprisingly sturdy base for DIY soles.

🕰️ People have made protective footwear for thousands of years; Ötzi the Iceman's shoes were over 5,000 years old.

👟 Upcycling old materials into shoes reduces waste and gives fabric scraps and cardboard a fun second life.

📏 When tracing and measuring a foot for shoes, add about 1–1.5 cm (½ inch) so toes can wiggle comfortably.

How do I make simple recycled shoes from cardboard and fabric for my child?

Trace each child’s foot onto cardboard, leaving a 1 cm gap for comfort. Cut two identical soles and stack layers for strength, gluing them together. Cut fabric straps or make straps from string; attach by gluing or threading and knotting through small holes. Reinforce attachment points with tape or extra cardboard. Let glue dry fully, trim rough edges, and check fit. Use adult help for cutting and hot glue.

What materials do I need to make recycled shoes at home?

You'll need sturdy cardboard (cereal boxes or corrugated), fabric scraps or felt, child-safe glue or hot glue (adult use), scissors (child and adult sizes), pencil and ruler, string or elastic for straps, tape, a hole punch or awl for strap holes, markers or paint for decoration, and optional padding like foam or cotton. Keep small embellishments away from toddlers and have adult supervision for cutting and hot glue steps.

What ages are recycled cardboard shoes suitable for?

This craft suits ages 4 and up with supervision: preschoolers (4–5) can help trace, glue, and decorate while an adult handles cutting and any hot glue. Elementary kids (6–9) can measure, cut with safety scissors, and attach straps with guidance. Tweens (10+) can design sturdier soles and experiment with patterns. Adjust complexity to skill level, and always supervise sharp tools, small parts, and hot glue.

What are the benefits and safety tips for making recycled shoes with kids?

Making recycled shoes teaches measuring, cutting, and problem-solving while promoting creativity and environmental awareness. It builds fine motor skills, planning, and confidence as children design and test fits. Safety tip: avoid small decorations for toddlers, use child-safe glue, and supervise scissors and hot glue. Variation: turn them into sandals, add foam padding for comfort, or decorate with fabric paint and buttons for different styles.
