Make Your Own Cardboard Puppet Theatre I Activities for Children

What you need
Cardboard box, paint, paintbrushes, fabric for curtains, tape, glue, scissors, colouring materials, paper bags or socks for puppets, googly eyes, yarn, popsicle sticks, adult supervision required

Step 1

Gather all your materials on a clear table so everything is ready to use.

Step 2

Place the box on the table with its largest side facing you.

Step 3

Use a pencil to draw a big rectangular window on the front of the box leaving about a 2 inch border all around.

Step 4

Ask an adult to cut out the rectangle you drew so the front becomes the puppet stage opening.

Step 5

Paint the outside of the box a bright color and wait for the paint to dry.

Step 6

Cut two equal rectangles from the fabric to make the stage curtains.

Step 7

Fold over the top edge of each fabric rectangle to make a small pocket for a curtain rod.

Step 8

Tape the folded pocket edges to the inside top of the box so the curtains hang and can open and close.

Step 9

Decorate the front of the stage with stars letters or fun shapes using paint or colouring materials.

Step 10

Tape a scrap of fabric or paper to the inside bottom of the box to make the stage floor.

Step 11

Make at least two simple puppets by decorating paper bags or socks with googly eyes yarn and colouring materials and attach a popsicle stick if you want a handle.

Step 12

Practice a short story or scene with your puppets behind the stage with a friend or family member.

Step 13

Share your finished puppet stage and performance on DIY.org

Help!?

What can we use instead of fabric for the curtains or googly eyes if those items are hard to find?

If fabric is hard to find, cut two equal rectangles from construction paper or an old t-shirt for the curtains and replace googly eyes with drawn eyes, stickers, or buttons when decorating the puppets.

My curtains keep falling or won't open properly — how can we fix that?

If the folded pocket edges taped to the inside top of the box don't hold the curtains, slide a thin straw or pencil through the pocket as a curtain rod and secure it with stronger tape or glue so the curtains can open and close smoothly.

How can we adapt the activity for younger children or make it more challenging for older kids?

For younger kids have an adult cut out the rectangle and pre-paint the box while they stick on simple decorations and make paper-bag puppets, and for older kids ask them to paint a detailed backdrop, add a battery LED inside the box, and build moving curtain rods from straws and string.

What are some ways to extend or personalize the puppet stage after following the main steps?

Extend the project by painting a backdrop on the inside back before taping the stage floor, taping a strip of LED lights to the inside top for stage lighting, and making extra puppets from socks or popsicle-stick handles with movable limbs.

Facts about puppetry and theatre for kids

🎭 Puppetry is ancient — examples of puppet-like figures appear in records from over 3,000 years ago.

📦 A single cardboard box can be transformed into a whole tabletop theater with paint, fabric curtains, and imagination.

🧵 Simple puppets like sock or paper-bag puppets can be made in under 10 minutes with glue, buttons, and markers.

🤝 Putting on a puppet show encourages teamwork — kids divide roles, build sets, and rehearse together.

🎨 Decorating a puppet stage with paint and fabric helps develop fine motor skills and creative storytelling.

How do I build a tabletop puppet stage from a cardboard box?

Start by cutting one long side or the top of a sturdy cardboard box to create an open-front stage, leaving a three-sided frame. Paint or decorate the outside and inside; let dry. Attach fabric curtains across the top with tape, staples, or glued ribbon so they can open and close. Make simple puppets from socks, paper bags, or stick puppets. Rehearse short stories and take turns behind the stage to practice lines, movement, and teamwork.

What materials do I need to make a tabletop puppet stage?

You’ll need a cardboard box (shoe or larger), scissors or a craft knife (adult use), paint and brushes, scrap fabric or lightweight curtains, tape, glue or stapler, markers and stickers for decoration, materials for puppets like socks, paper bags, wooden spoons, popsicle sticks or paper cutouts, and optional items such as dowels, elastic, and a hot glue gun. Keep non-toxic paints and child-safe scissors on hand.

What ages is a cardboard tabletop puppet stage suitable for?

This craft suits ages about 3–10, with adjustments. Ages 3–4 enjoy puppets and simple performances with adult help for cutting and gluing. Ages 5–7 can help decorate, make basic puppets, and rehearse short stories. Ages 8–10 can design more complex stages, sew simple curtains, and lead group performances. Always supervise young children with sharp tools, small parts, or hot glue, and adapt complexity to each child’s motor skills.

What are the benefits and safety tips for the puppet stage activity?

Benefits include encouraging creativity, language and storytelling, fine-motor skills from puppet making, social skills and teamwork during rehearsals, and confidence from performing. Safety tips: use non-toxic paints and washable materials, supervise cutting, stapling or hot glue, keep small parts away from under-3s, secure the stage so it won’t tip, and work in a well-ventilated area. Set clear rules for safe puppet handling and swaps to avoid conflicts.
