What can we use if we don't have a plate, napkin, or crayons for the activity?

If you don't have a clean plate use a small bowl or a folded paper towel, substitute the napkin with another paper towel, and use colored pencils, markers, or even crayons from another set for the drawing and coloring step.

What should we do if it's hard to 'look closely' at the snack or read the packaging to write three things you notice?

If details are hard to see for step 4, use a magnifying glass or take a close-up photo of the snack and its packaging with an adult's help, then pause the photo to list three things you notice.

How can we adapt the tasting and review for younger or older kids?

For younger children have an adult handle 'Ask an adult for permission', cut the snack into tiny pieces, and write or draw their observations and star rating for them, while older kids can research ingredients, write more detailed flavor descriptions in step 8, and make a longer review to share on DIY.org.

What are simple ways to extend or personalize the snack review after finishing the basic steps?

You can personalize the activity by pasting a photo of the packaging next to your colored drawing, adding a short map or note about the snack's country of origin, comparing it to two familiar snacks as in step 9, and recording a brief video review to upload when you share on DIY.org.

Facts about food tasting and sensory exploration

✍️ Food reviewers score items on taste, texture, aroma, appearance, and value—perfect checklist for your review!

👅 Humans detect five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.

🍫 Japan has dozens of unique Kit Kat flavors, including matcha, sake, and wasabi!

🌶️ Some countries love spicy snacks so much that spicy potato chips and ramen chips are national favorites.

👃 Up to about 80% of what we call "flavor" actually comes from smell, so sniffing a snack tells you a lot.

How do I guide my child to review a foreign snack step by step?

With adult permission, start by checking ingredients and allergies. Give a tiny sample and ask your child to smell first, then taste slowly. Prompt them to notice flavors (sweet, salty, spicy), textures (crunchy, chewy), and how it changes while chewing. Have them compare it to a familiar snack and write one or two sentences about likes or dislikes. Finish by drawing the snack and giving a simple rating or sticker.

What materials do I need to do a foreign snack tasting and review at home?

You’ll need a small portion of the foreign snack, water and plain crackers to cleanse the palate, napkins, and spoons or toothpicks. Prepare a simple tasting sheet or paper for notes, pencils and crayons for writing and drawing, and a safe plate. Also have allergy information, emergency contact details, and adult supervision available before tasting to ensure safety.

What ages is a foreign snack review activity suitable for?

This activity suits children about 4–12 years old with adult supervision. Younger kids (4–6) benefit from tasting tiny portions, drawing, and saying short words while parents record comments. Ages 7–9 can write simple sentences and compare flavors. Older kids (10–12) can research the snack’s country and write fuller reviews. Always supervise for choking risks and food allergies regardless of age.

What safety tips and benefits should I know before tasting foreign snacks with my child?

Safety first: check ingredient labels for allergens, introduce tiny amounts, avoid choking hazards, and ensure adult supervision. If the snack is unfamiliar, research common allergens and avoid high-risk items (nuts, raw eggs). Benefits include expanding taste preferences, learning about other cultures, practicing descriptive language and observational writing, and developing fine motor skills through drawing. Keep a calm, positive tone so children feel safe to try new flavors.
