What can we use if we don't have a food scale or measuring cups?

If you don't have a scale or measuring cups, use clean kitchen measuring spoons or an adult's tablespoon and follow the vet portion sizes by counting spoonfuls as in the "Measure the dry ingredients with the measuring cups or scale according to the vet portions" step.

What if the ingredients won't mix well or the food is too hot for the pet?

If ingredients don't mix or the food is too hot, ask an adult to finish cooking/chopping until fully cooked and cut very small, add a little cool water or extra canned ingredient, then stir gently with the spoon until mixed evenly and let it cool to room temperature per the 'Stir the ingredients gently' and 'Let the food cool to room temperature' steps.

How can we adapt the activity for different ages?

Have toddlers help wash hands and gather materials, school-age kids measure portions with measuring cups or a scale and stir the mixing bowl while an adult chops or cooks, and teens follow all steps including portioning into the pet's bowl and sharing the photo on DIY.org.

How can we make the pet meal more special or personalized?

Personalize the meal by mixing in a small vet-approved favorite canned ingredient or garnish, weigh and label portions for future meals using the same measuring cup or spoon, and finish by taking the photo and short description to share on DIY.org as instructed.

Facts about pet nutrition and safety

āš–ļø Over half of pets in many countries are overweight, so measuring portions helps keep them fit and happy.

🐱 Cats can't taste sweet flavors because of a natural gene mutation, which is why sugary treats don't appeal to them.

🚫 Chocolate, grapes, onions and the sweetener xylitol are toxic to many pets—never feed human snacks without checking first.

🐶 Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds—much fewer than humans—so they experience flavors differently!

🩺 Vets calculate safe daily calories and portions using a pet's weight, age and activity level—ask one before changing meals.

How do I plan and prepare a simple, vet-approved meal for my pet with my child?

Start by asking your veterinarian which ingredients and portion sizes are safe for your pet. Together with your child, pick a simple recipe using vet-approved ingredients. Wash hands and prep ingredients; cook proteins plain and fully, and steam or boil approved vegetables. Measure portions with a kitchen scale or measuring cups, let food cool, serve in a clean bowl, and supervise the child at every step. Finally, clean and store leftovers labeled with date.

What materials and ingredients do I need to prepare a safe pet meal at home?

You'll need a vetted ingredient list, fresh vet-approved protein (like cooked plain chicken or beef), safe vegetables (carrot, green beans, plain pumpkin), a kitchen scale or measuring cups, clean bowls and utensils, cutting board, pots or baking sheet, oven mitts, food thermometer, airtight storage containers, soap and sanitizer, and printed recipe or one-page instructions for kids. Keep pet-safe emergency contact info handy and avoid toxic items such as onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and x

What ages is this pet meal activity suitable for?

This activity suits different ages with proper supervision: Ages 3–5 can wash produce, pour pre-measured ingredients, and learn about pet needs. Ages 6–8 can measure, mix, and use kid-safe tools with guidance. Ages 9–12 can help cook simple steps and read portion instructions. Teens can lead planning, cooking, and cleaning while an adult handles hot surfaces. Always supervise children around heat, knives, and food-handling tasks.

What safety steps should we follow when preparing homemade pet food?

Before starting, confirm ingredients and portion sizes with your veterinarian. Never use onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, raisins, or xylitol. Cook proteins thoroughly, remove bones, skip added salt and spices, and cool food before serving. Use clean utensils and sanitize surfaces to prevent cross-contamination. Measure portions to avoid overfeeding and watch your pet for allergic reactions or digestive upset. Keep emergency vet contact info handy and store leftovers in sealed containers.
